I put it up for sale. For Jessica, I froze her joint account, canceled her car insurance, and closed the credit card under my name.<\/p>\n

I owned the diner where my mother once worked, as well as Jessica and Mark\u2019s rental home. I decided to sell the diner and raise their rent to market value.<\/p>\n

My phone buzzed constantly\u2014calls, texts, accusations, pleas. I ignored them.<\/h3>\n

By Wednesday, my mother\u2019s card was declined at the grocery store. She called in a panic.\u00a0\u201cDavid, my card won\u2019t work! The bank says there\u2019s no money!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n
