Tim Walz, regarding his lies about his military record and a past drunk-driving arrest.<\/p>\n<p>One out, CNN, has since been forced to correct the record and admit that Walz repeatedly lied about the DUI arrest in 1995 while he was running for Congress roughly a decade later \u2014 after he quit the Army National Guard when his unit received orders to deploy to a combat zone.<\/p>\n<p>On September 23, 1995, Walz was stopped by a Nebraska trooper for speeding at 96 mph in a 55 mph zone. The officer detected alcohol on Walz\u2019s breath, leading to a field sobriety test and a blood-alcohol test, both of which Walz failed. He spent the night in jail and later admitted to driving under the influence, according to court records.<\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-2\">Advertisement<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-7063311234970495\" data-ad-slot=\"2702911965\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins><\/div>\n<p>During his congressional campaign, Walz\u2019s campaign falsely asserted that he had not been drinking. Instead, they claimed that Walz had failed the field sobriety test due to alleged hearing loss from his service in the National Guard.<\/p>\n<p>As the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/15\/politics\/tim-walz-2006-campaign-falsely-described-dwi-kfile\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CNN report<\/a>\u00a0put it, \u201cNone of that was true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report listed the falsehoods from the campaign, which was echoed in numerous media reports. A local newspaper called the New Elm Journal, for example, reported the following:<\/p>\n<p><em>According to Walz\u2019s campaign staff, Walz denies being drunk the night of the incident. Walz was hard of hearing, a result of his years as an artillery soldier in the Army National Guard, and had trouble hearing the trooper, according to Meredith Salsbery, communications director for the Walz campaign.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Salsbery, Walz\u2019s then-communications director, further told the paper that Walz \u201ccouldn\u2019t understand what the trooper was telling him during the field sobriety test, and the trooper refused to speak up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DUI charges were dropped for a reason,\u201d she continued, referring to Walz\u2019s plea deal. \u201cThe judge would not have dismissed them if there were anything to them. Tim drove to the police station that night (after being stopped), and he drove home afterwards. I don\u2019t think the trooper would have allowed that if he thought there was a problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The same false claims were made to the Post Bulletin, another local paper:<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzu7645x000u3b6k5goau069@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>Walz\u2019s campaign manager Kerry Greeley didn\u2019t dispute that Walz was speeding when he was pulled over that night, but she said Walz was not drunk. She attributed the misunderstanding to Walz\u2019s deafness, a condition resulting from his years of serving as an artillerist in the Army National Guard.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzu7645x000x3b6kn0zjf124@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>\u201cHe couldn\u2019t understand what the officer was saying to him,\u201d Greeley said.<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"code-block code-block-10\">Advertisement<\/p>\n<div id=\"ld-12578241793956198-359\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph-primary-core-light\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzu7645x000y3b6k8a0l849y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\"><em>She said deaf people also can have balance issues. The judge eventually threw out the DUI charges against Walz and chastised the officer for not realizing that Walz was deaf, Greeley said.<\/em><\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzu7645x000y3b6k8a0l849y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Greenley also told the Star Tribune that Walz \u201cwas caught speeding, he doesn\u2019t deny it, and that\u2019s the end of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/clzu7645x000y3b6k8a0l849y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\" data-analytics-observe=\"off\">Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro recently scrutinized the Harris campaign\u2019s portrayal of Walz as a quintessential all-American dad with deep roots in the heartland.
