My sister picked up a container of fresh strawberries from a very large and reputable grocery chain today. Everything looked normal \u2014 nice packaging, plump red berries, sealed in tight plastic wrap. She brought it home, put it on the counter, and was about to wash some when she noticed something\u2026 moving.<\/p>\n

At first, she thought her eyes were playing tricks on her. But no, nestled among the strawberries, coiled neatly like it belonged there, was a LIVE SNAKE. Yes \u2014 a real, breathing snake, sealed inside the package.\u00a0\ud83d\ude31<\/p>\n

We\u2019re not snake experts, but it looks like a small garter snake \u2014 harmless in the wild, maybe, but definitely not something you want in your food. We don\u2019t know how it got there \u2014 was it in the field? The packaging plant? The store? Either way, this is a huge food safety and quality control issue.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ve already contacted the grocery store and are in the process of escalating the matter to their corporate office. We\u2019re also planning to report it to the appropriate health authorities, because this is not just a quirky \u201coops!\u201d moment \u2014 this could have gone very wrong for someone who\u2019s afraid of snakes, or worse, if it had been venomous.<\/p>\n

Let me be clear: we\u2019re not trying to start drama or go viral. But we do believe people should know this happened. If it happened to us, it could happen to someone else.
