Halfway through the procedure, I noticed something different. Dr. Harris paused for a moment, his face pale. He leaned slightly against the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cDoctor, are you alright?\u201d one of the nurses asked softly.<\/p>\n

He shook his head, barely audible: \u201cMy blood pressure\u2026 it\u2019s dropping.\u201d<\/p>\n

The truth was, he\u2019d been battling food poisoning from the night before, and now it was hitting him hard. In that instant, the atmosphere grew tense. Any other surgeon might have stepped away, handing the scalpel to a colleague. But Dr. Harris didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n

He looked at the patient, then back at us, and said firmly: \u201cWe can\u2019t stop. Prepare an IV\u2014use my leg. I\u2019ll finish this.\u201d<\/p>\n
