Before I could respond, Mark\u2019s truck pulled in. He stepped out, froze, and nearly dropped his toolbox.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre those\u2026 real babies?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cVery real,\u201d I whispered. \u201cAnd apparently, they\u2019re ours now.\u201d<\/p>\n

At least temporarily, I thought. But the protective fire in Savannah\u2019s eyes told me otherwise.<\/p>\n

The next hours blurred. Police came, followed by a social worker, Mrs. Rodriguez, who examined the babies.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re healthy,\u201d she said gently. \u201cTwo or three days old. Someone cared for them before\u2026 this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happens now?\u201d Mark asked.<\/p>\n

\u201cFoster placement tonight,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n

Savannah broke down. \u201cNo! You can\u2019t take them! I prayed for them every night. God sent them to me. Please, Mom, don\u2019t let them take my babies!\u201d<\/p>\n

Her tears undid me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can provide care,\u201d I blurted. \u201cLet them stay just tonight, while you figure things out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something in our faces\u2014or Savannah\u2019s desperation\u2014softened Mrs. Rodriguez. She agreed.<\/p>\n
