Richard stared at his son. In his mind\u2019s eye Oliver was a baby again, damp curls stuck to his forehead after bath time, a boy who built cities of blocks with the precision of a small architect. He\u2019d noticed the hesitations during homework, the fidgeting. He\u2019d chalked it up to restlessness, to being eight. Had he been\u2026 absent? Or simply blind?<\/p>\n
Grace drew a worn notebook from her apron pocket and slid it across the coffee table. \u201cWe\u2019ve been practicing with rhythm,\u201d she said. \u201cClapping syllables, reading to a beat. Music helps.\u201d Inside, Richard found neat columns: dates, doodled stars, tiny milestones\u2014read three pages without help<\/em>,\u00a0asked for new chapter<\/em>,\u00a0spoke up in class<\/em>. At the top someone had written, in Oliver\u2019s uneven printing,\u00a0Courage Points<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Something inside Richard loosened. \u201cYou\u2019ve been doing all this?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019ve been doing it,\u201d Grace said, nodding at Oliver.<\/p>\n \u201cThe school thought I shouldn\u2019t have fought,\u201d Oliver blurted, as if the confession burned. \u201cBut Ben was crying. They made him read out loud and he mixed up\u00a0b<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0d<\/em>\u00a0again.
