Zayden listened. He asked questions. He didn\u2019t smile, but he didn\u2019t shut down either. That night, he said he wanted to see her again. So we arranged more visits.<\/p>\n

Gradually, he began to open up.<\/p>\n

Micah didn\u2019t say much.<\/p>\n

Then one night, as I tucked him in, he whispered, \u201cIf she takes him, I won\u2019t have a best friend anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head. \u201cNothing can take away what you two share. No matter where he lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI made a promise,\u201d he said again, as if that explained everything.<\/p>\n
