He knelt to her eye level. \u201cYes, little one. I was very sad. My wife and I were expecting twins. We were driving to see my parents when we had an accident. They didn\u2019t make it. She didn\u2019t make it.\u201d<\/p>\n
His voice broke.<\/p>\n
\u201cI did. And I wished I hadn\u2019t. I drowned myself in alcohol. My brother took over the company while I stopped caring. I wasn\u2019t homeless because of money. I was homeless because I had no will to live.\u201d<\/p>\n
Lily whispered, \u201cI\u2019m sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n
He met her gaze, eyes wet. \u201cThat day outside the store, I wasn\u2019t hungry. I was tired of breathing. And then you came\u2014with your lemonade and your little voice. You reminded me of my wife. You woke me up. You saved me.\u201d<\/p>\n
