Leonard shouted something incoherent, but Moose stood his ground, placing himself between the man and the girl.<\/p>\n

It was as if this wasn\u2019t his first time doing exactly that.<\/p>\n

After Leonard was removed, the courtroom let out a collective exhale.<\/p>\n

Isla reached down, buried her face in Moose\u2019s fur, and whispered, \u201cWe did it, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears streamed down Megan\u2019s cheeks. Jim squeezed her hand.<\/p>\n

The judge cleared her throat. \u201cIsla\u2026 you are incredibly brave. And Moose\u2014\u201d she chuckled, wiping at her eye, \u201c\u2014you deserve a medal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Three weeks later, we all gathered at City Hall for a small ceremony.<\/h3>\n

Judge Dawson had contacted the mayor personally. Moose was officially awarded the\u00a0Medal of Loyalty and Bravery<\/strong>, the first of its kind for a service dog in our town.<\/p>\n

Isla stood tall in her new blue dress, holding Moose\u2019s leash with pride.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s not just my dog,\u201d she told the local news crew. \u201cHe\u2019s my best friend. He always knows when I\u2019m scared\u2026 and he always stands up for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked if she had anything to say to other kids who were scared, she paused thoughtfully.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if people don\u2019t believe you right away, just hold on. Find someone\u2014like Moose\u2014who sees you. And don\u2019t be afraid to raise your hand.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked over at Judge Dawson, who had tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n

She later pulled me aside and said, \u201cRachel, that girl reminded me why I do this. It\u2019s not about the paperwork. It\u2019s about the tiny raised hands in rooms full of grown-ups. It\u2019s about dogs who growl at the truth. And it\u2019s about listening. Really listening.\u201d<\/p>\n
