She was unaware that I was observing from the other side of the street.
\nShe was resolute and concentrated, as if this small patch of pavement were a mission she would not fail to complete.<\/p>\n
Miss Inez was someone I had seen previously.
\nlived three homes down the street, waved at the mailman as if it were a formal appointment, and kept her curtains open at all times.<\/p>\n
She was different today, though.
\nPerhaps exhausted.
\nTaking deep breaths.<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, she continued.<\/p>\n
She gave me a kind wave when I eventually crossed over to inquire if she needed assistance.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m fine,\u201d she said.
\n\u201cI\u2019m just giving the Mitchell boy something hot.\u201d He has spent the last three nights at home by himself because his mother is ill.<\/p>\n
She repositioned the towel-wrapped bag and continued to move.<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand what it\u2019s like,\u201d she said quietly.
\n\u201cTo feel lost.\u201d<\/p>\n
I saw the taped-up letter on top of the container at that point.
\nShe wrote clearly but shakily.<\/p>\n
Additionally, the front just has two words:<\/p>\n
\u201cYou are important.\u201d<\/p>\n
She allowed me to walk with her this time when I volunteered to do so again.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
She stopped every few feet to catch her breath, not because she was weak.
\nAs if she were reserving her energy for the most important part\u2014the delivery.<\/p>\n
After ten minutes or so, we arrived at the Mitchell residence.
\nPeeling paint. The curtains are drawn. There\u2019s no vehicle in the driveway.<\/p>\n
Miss Inez used the side of her knuckle to knock twice.
\nHe was there, perhaps twelve or thirteen, as the door just cracked open.
\nEye fatigue. His hair was disheveled, as if he hadn\u2019t used a comb in a long time.<\/p>\n
Her voice was as warm as the soup as she said, \u201cEvening, baby.\u201d
\n\u201cI brought dinner for you.\u201d<\/p>\n
He blinked.
\ninitially remained silent.
\nonly gazed at the bag as if unsure if it was truly for him.<\/p>\n
Then, slowly and carefully, he reached for it and held it as if it were about to come apart.<\/p>\n
\u201cMama is still in the hospital,\u201d he muttered.
\n\u201cThey haven\u2019t decided yet.\u201d<\/p>\n
Miss Inez gave a nod. After that, you must eat. Additionally, you must keep in mind\u2014
\nShe gave the letter a tap.
\n\u201cThat you are on someone\u2019s mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cThank you,\u201d as we turned to go.<\/p>\n
And he added something that hurt my chest right before we left the porch.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been three days since anyone has knocked on our door.\u201d<\/p>\n
We took a slower walk home.<\/p>\n
Joking that I could exchange her for a bike, I offered to carry the walker.
\nShe grinned.<\/p>\n
She remarked, \u201cPeople always think the little things don\u2019t matter.\u201d
\nBut some nice words and a warm bowl? Someone may be reminded that they are still welcome in the world by that.<\/p>\n
The twist?<\/p>\n
The boy\u2019s mother returned home from the hospital later that week.
\nNeighbors began leaving stuff out over the course of the following few days, so word must have spread.<\/p>\n
This is a dish.
\nA collection of comic books that someone\u2019s child had outgrown.
\nEven three households on the block signed a handwritten card.<\/p>\n
What, nevertheless, stuck the most?<\/p>\n
That note on the cassette.
\n\u201cYou are important.\u201d<\/p>\n
It was taped to the refrigerator by the boy.<\/p>\n
And guess who was the first to arrive every morning when Miss Inez herself required assistance around the house after suffering a minor fall a few months later?<\/p>\n
The same child.
\nA fresh grin.
\ncarrying rather than receiving bags.<\/p>\n
This is what I\u2019ve discovered:<\/p>\n
It takes very little to alter someone\u2019s day or course.<\/p>\n
Only six blocks.
\nA walker.
\nA towel wrapped around a warm dinner.
\nAdditionally, a reminder that you are not invisible is included. You\u2019re not by yourself. You are still important.<\/p>\n
