Ethan pressed his forehead against Shadow\u2019s.

Ethan swallowed hard.

Shadow licked his chin \u2014 slow, deliberate.<\/p>\n

Passengers nearby wiped their own tears.
Someone whispered, \u201cMy God\u2026\u201d
Another murmured, \u201cThat\u2019s loyalty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ethan stood straighter, placing both hands on Shadow\u2019s cheeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go home, buddy.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shadow did something he hadn\u2019t done since the war \u2014 he barked twice, sharp and proud, as if answering a command only he and Ethan understood.<\/p>\n

They walked together toward the airport doors \u2014 a soldier and the dog he saved, and who saved him in return.<\/p>\n

And for the first time in years\u2026
Ethan didn\u2019t feel alone.<\/p>\n
