After losing his legal appeal<\/a> over royal protection, the Duke of Sussex spoke to BBC News in a recently aired interview.<\/a> He expressed a mixture of sadness, urgency, and certainty regarding his future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would love reconciliation with my family,\u201d<\/strong> he said<\/a>. \u201cThere\u2019s no point continuing to fight anymore. As I said, life is precious. I don\u2019t know how much longer my father has. You know, he won\u2019t speak to me because of this security stuff. But it would be nice to reconcile.\u201d <\/strong>He added, \u201cIf they don\u2019t want that, that\u2019s entirely up to them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The conversation took place soon after his plea to reverse the government\u2019s decision to reduce his police protection while in Britain was denied by a U.K. court. According to Harry, the decision exposed him to \u201cunjustified and inferior treatment\u201d<\/strong>. On May 2, 2025, however, the Court of Appeal dismissed his claim<\/a> and upheld the ruling.<\/p>\n

During his conversation with BBC\u2019s Neda Torfi\u0107, Harry said he was \u201cObviously, pretty gutted about the decision.\u201d <\/strong>The prince, who is now 40, also said he is currently unable to return to the United Kingdom with his wife and children. \u201cWe thought it was going to go our way, but it certainly hasn\u2019t,\u201d <\/strong>he shared.<\/p>\n

The Duke said he has only visited the United Kingdom for funerals, court appearances, and the occasional charity function. He lives in California with his wife, Meghan, and their kids, Archie and Lilibet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI put myself at risk for that, but I will continue on with a life of public service,\u201d <\/strong>he said. \u201cI can\u2019t see a world in which I would be bringing my wife and children back to the U.K. at this point. And the things that they\u2019re going to miss is\u2014well, everything. [sic]\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Harry\u2019s loss of security seems to be a major factor in the conflict between him and the royal institution. \u201cJust because you spoke there about forgiveness\u2014it sounds like the last step to repairing relations with your family is the security issue, by what you said there,\u201d<\/strong> Torfi\u0107 said.<\/p>\n

One hundred percent,\u201d<\/strong> said Harry. \u201cWhatever noise has been created, whatever stories have been written\u2014this has always been the sticking point.\u201d <\/strong>He continued by describing how he was taken aback by the 2020 decision to revoke his protection.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod forbid anything should happen. And I don\u2019t regret that at all,\u201d<\/strong> he said of his decision to step away from royal duties. \u201cI thought with all the disagreements and all of the chaos that\u2019s happening, the one thing that I could rely on is my family keeping me safe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

But instead, he said, \u201cNot only did they decide to remove my security in the U.K., but they also signaled to every single government around the world not to protect us.\u201d<\/strong> Harry shared that the effect of the ruling is deeply personal.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the rift, Harry acknowledged that some wounds may never fully heal, saying, \u201cOf course, some members of my family will never forgive me for writing a book. Of course they will never forgive me for lots of things.\u201d <\/strong>Still, he expressed, \u201cIt would be nice to reconcile.\u201d<\/p>\n
