I left with a broken heart. It hurt \u2014 I just wanted to help, to be human.<\/p>\n

The next morning, around eight o\u2019clock, I received a call from the same manager. I thought he wanted to give me my final paycheck, but his voice sounded completely different \u2014 anxious.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome to the caf\u00e9 immediately,\u201d he said. \u201cWe need to talk. It\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n

When I arrived, he greeted me without arrogance. For the first time, he looked unsettled.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast night someone tried to rob our caf\u00e9,\u201d he began. \u201cThey broke the window. But\u2026 that homeless man\u2026 sorry, that unhoused man\u2026 the one you fed\u2026 he was nearby, heard the noise, caught the thieves, called the police, and stayed here until morning, until we arrived.
