When pancreatic cancer took him three years ago, I was devastated. We all were.<\/p>\n

At the reading of his will, I discovered he\u2019d left me seventy-five percent ownership of Harlo Technologies, then valued at $25,600,000. The remaining shares went to longtime employees who had helped build the company.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour grandfather believed in you more than anyone,\u201d his lawyer, Frank Thompson, told me privately after the reading. \u201cHe said you had the head for business and the heart for people\u2014the perfect combination.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taking over as CEO was intimidating, but I channeled my grief into honoring his legacy. I kept a low profile in my personal life. No flashy cars or luxury apartments that would broadcast my wealth. I lived comfortably but modestly in a downtown loft, drove a three-year-old Audi, and continued my grandfather\u2019s tradition of anonymous philanthropy.<\/p>\n
