Taking to Truth Social, Trump wrote: \u201cCongratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who was just named Pope. It is such an honor to realize that he is the first American Pope.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat excitement, and what a Great Honor for our Country. I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. It will be a very meaningful moment!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting that Prevost decided on Pope Leo XIV, a name with strong Catholic connotations.<\/p>\n

What is the meaning behind Pope Leo\u2019s name?<\/h2>\n

He has associated himself with a tradition of doctrinal clarity and strong leadership by selecting the name.<\/p>\n

Popes are not required to change their names when they assume office, but for the past 470 years, all of them have done so, frequently using a predecessor\u2019s name to pay tribute to them and express their intention to emulate them.<\/p>\n

Leo XIII, an Italian born Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Pecci, was the last pope to hold that title. He was well-known for his social teachings and intellectual accomplishments during his 1878\u20131903 tenure.<\/p>\n

The Holy See\u2019s director also discussed the meaning of the name\u2019s selection with reporters.<\/p>\n

He clarified that the encyclical \u201cRerum Novarum,\u201d <\/strong>which translates to \u201cOf New Things,\u201d<\/strong>is credited to Pope Leo XIII and is \u201cregarded as the foundation for the modern social doctrine of the Church.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Father Vito Crincoli spoke to ABC News<\/a> and added, \u201cLooking to the history, Leos were strong popes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cLike Leo XIII, he loved his people. He loved his people. His people, he considered man not a machine. A man\u2019s work was a reflection of his dignity.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t know this yet, but it\u2019d be really interesting to know why he took the name Leo.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Prior to this, Pope Leo was the general of the Order of Saint Augustine from 2001 to 2013 and the Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru from 2015 to 2023.<\/p>\n

His first remarks as pope were, \u201cMay peace be with all of you,\u201d <\/strong>spoken to the assembly at St. Peter\u2019s Basilica.<\/p>\n
