I was shocked because I\u2019d never heard this before.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne person saw me, one teacher, treated me like I had value, like my potential mattered more than my circumstances.\u201d Dad\u2019s voice thickened. \u201cThat teacher changed my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf someone hadn\u2019t given me a chance when I had nothing, I wouldn\u2019t have this.\u201d He gestured around. At our house, our life. \u201cI wouldn\u2019t have you or Charlie or any of this.\u201d<\/p>\n
