The blood drained from my face. It was barely 5:45. Dinner wasn\u2019t supposed to be served until 5:00.<\/span><\/p>\n

I dialed her number, my hands shaking. It went to voicemail. I dialed again. Nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLauren?\u201d\u00a0<\/span>Dr. Meredith Wilson<\/span><\/strong>, my closest friend and confidante at the hospital, stepped into the breakroom. She took one look at my face and closed the door. \u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSomething happened,\u201d I whispered. My phone rang in my hand. Harper.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHarper!\u201d I answered, my voice pitching up. \u201cWhere are you? Are you okay?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m fine, Mom.\u201d Her voice was terrifyingly flat. Devoid of emotion. A defense mechanism I recognized all too well. \u201cI\u2019m driving home.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? It\u2019s Christmas dinner. Did you eat?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d A pause. A heavy, wet intake of breath. \u201cThere wasn\u2019t room.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean,\u00a0<\/span>there wasn\u2019t room<\/span>?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAunt Amanda brought four extra people. Colleagues of Uncle Thomas who were in town. Grandma said\u2026 she said the dining room table was full. She told me to eat at the kitchen counter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I gripped the edge of the table so hard my knuckles turned white. \u201cShe what?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI said it was fine,\u201d Harper continued, her voice cracking now. \u201cI tried to be helpful. But then Grandma started rearranging the seating chart. She made sure Ethan and Zoe had seats at the main table. When I walked into the kitchen with my plate\u2026 Grandma came in. She said having me in the kitchen was making it hard for the caterers to stage the food. She said it was too chaotic. She said\u2026\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Harper began to sob. \u201cShe told me maybe I should just come back another time. When there was more room. She sent me home, Mom.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
