I learned early how to disappear in plain sight\u2014head down, hoodie up, eyes on the floor.<\/p>\n

The worst part wasn\u2019t the insults.<\/p>\n

It was lying to my mom.<\/p>\n

Every day she\u2019d ask, \u201cHow was school, sweetheart? You and your friends have a good day?\u201d<\/p>\n

Because she came home exhausted. Her hands were cracked from chemicals. Her back hurt constantly. And still, she\u2019d hum while making dinner, telling me she was proud of me, that I was going to have a better life.<\/p>\n

I refused to add my pain to her burden.<\/p>\n

So I carried it alone.<\/p>\n

Senior year came faster than I expected.<\/p>\n

Everyone talked about college plans, parties, futures. Teachers praised the \u201cpromising students.\u201d Parents bragged loudly in the bleachers.<\/p>\n

No one talked to me.<\/p>\n

And that was okay\u2014because I had a plan.<\/h2>\n

Graduation day arrived bright and unbearably hot. I watched my classmates laugh in their gowns, parents snapping photos, teachers smiling proudly.<\/p>\n

My mom sat in the second row.<\/p>\n

She wore her best dress\u2014the blue one she only wore on holidays. Her hair was neatly tied back, and her hands were folded in her lap, like she didn\u2019t quite believe she belonged there.<\/p>\n

When my name was called to give the student speech, there was polite applause. Nothing more.<\/p>\n

My mom stood too, crying openly now, her hands shaking as she clapped.<\/p>\n
