At the bottom, what I saw made me freeze.<\/p>\n<p>Strings of soft lights glowed around the room. Bolts of colorful fabric were spread out across long tables. Rolls of thread, sewing patterns, and\u2014at the center\u2014a brand-new sewing machine.<\/p>\n<p>Hugo spun around, startled. \u201cMom! I wanted to help you. I used my birthday money to buy the machine, and L\u00e9a helped me set it up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tears welled up before I could speak.
