Bulging eyes (exophthalmia).<\/p>\n

Do\u00a0your eyes seem more bulging or\u00a0prominent than normal, as\u00a0if\u00a0you are always being surprised? This appearance may be\u00a0a\u00a0classic symptom of\u00a0Graves\u2019 disease, a\u00a0type of\u00a0autoimmune hyperthyroidism. In\u00a0this disease, the immune system mistakenly attacks the tissues behind the eye, pushing them outward.<\/p>\n

In\u00a0addition to\u00a0the physical change, you may experience eye pressure, double vision, dry eyes, or\u00a0difficulty closing your eyes completely while sleeping. It\u2019s not just a\u00a0cosmetic problem: If\u00a0left untreated, it\u00a0can seriously affect your vision. This condition is\u00a0more common in\u00a0women between the ages of\u00a030\u00a0and\u00a050, and is\u00a0often accompanied by\u00a0weight loss, nervousness, and insomnia.<\/p>\n

8. Iris color changes or\u00a0brown rings.<\/h2>\n

If\u00a0you look in\u00a0the mirror and notice a\u00a0brown, greenish, or\u00a0golden ring around your iris, you may have what is\u00a0called a\u00a0Kayser-Fleischer ring, a\u00a0visible sign of\u00a0Wilson\u2019s disease. This is\u00a0a\u00a0genetic disorder in\u00a0which the body accumulates excess copper, affecting organs such as\u00a0the liver, brain, and eyes.<\/p>\n

Although rare, it\u00a0can cause severe neurological damage if\u00a0not caught early. This ring appears on the cornea and does not affect vision, but is\u00a0a\u00a0valuable clue for doctors to\u00a0detect the disorder. If\u00a0you experience symptoms such as\u00a0tremors, slurred speech, or\u00a0involuntary movements along with this ring, seek medical attention immediately.<\/p>\n

9. Chronic redness.<\/h2>\n

A\u00a0little red in\u00a0your eyes after a\u00a0long night or\u00a0from allergies is\u00a0normal. But if\u00a0your eyes are constantly bloodshot, or\u00a0have a\u00a0constant burning sensation, it\u00a0could be\u00a0a\u00a0sign of\u00a0something more serious.<\/p>\n

You may experience severe pain, nausea, vomiting, and blurred vision with halos around lights. If\u00a0light bothers you more than usual, you may have photophobia, a\u00a0symptom of\u00a0several conditions. The causes can range from something as\u00a0mild as\u00a0a\u00a0migraine to\u00a0an\u00a0eye infection such as\u00a0keratitis, endophthalmitis, or\u00a0even meningitis.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0is\u00a0also common in\u00a0people who suffer from dry eye syndrome or\u00a0who spend long hours in\u00a0front of\u00a0unprotected digital displays. If\u00a0you work with a\u00a0screen all day, adjust the brightness, use blue light filters, and take breaks every 20\u00a0minutes to\u00a0blink and look away. If\u00a0you notice any strange changes in\u00a0your vision or\u00a0eyes, no\u00a0matter how minor, don\u2019t let it\u00a0go.<\/p>\n
