A newborn baby boy, wrapped in a thin, dirty blanket. His skin was cold to the touch. His tiny face was scrunched in pain as he cried, his little fists trembling.<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t remember thinking. I remember acting.<\/p>\n

I dropped to the tile floor, right there in my soaking uniform, and scooped him into my arms. I wrapped him in my clean work towels, pressing him against my chest, trying to give him whatever warmth I had left.<\/p>\n

A trucker walked in and stopped dead when he saw me on the floor holding the baby. He didn\u2019t ask questions\u2014he just pulled out his phone and called 911.<\/p>\n

The paramedics said another hour out there, and the baby might not have survived the cold.<\/p>\n

I rode in the ambulance with him, refusing to let go of his tiny hand. At the hospital, they asked me who I was.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m nobody,\u201d I said. \u201cI\u2019m just the one who found him.\u201d<\/p>\n

They called him \u201cJohn\u201d for paperwork. But in my heart, I called him Miracle. Because that\u2019s what he was.<\/p>\n

I visited him every day. Then I fostered him. Then, after months of paperwork and waiting and fear that someone might take him away, I adopted him.<\/p>\n

At 45 years old, I became a new mother again.<\/p>\n

I never told Miracle about the nights I cried from exhaustion. Or the shifts I worked back-to-back. Or how lonely the apartment felt once he fell asleep.<\/p>\n

I just loved him.<\/p>\n

I read to him until my voice went hoarse. Took him to free museum days. Borrowed books from the library. Encouraged every curiosity he had. When he brought home a science kit, we built it together on the kitchen table. When he struggled, I sat beside him.<\/p>\n

My biological children drifted further away. They said I was \u201calways busy.\u201d They didn\u2019t understand that I was finally needed again.<\/p>\n

Miracle grew into a young man who hugged me every morning before school and every night before bed. He never forgot to say thank you. He never forgot where he came from\u2014though he didn\u2019t know all of it.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother, Martha\u2014would you please stand?\u201d<\/p>\n

The room disappeared. All I could hear was my own heartbeat.<\/p>\n

As I stood, the entire auditorium rose with me.<\/p>\n
