There\u2014on a cold metal bench\u2014was my son. Alone. His blanket kicked aside, his tiny hands reaching out blindly into the air, his face flushed from cold and tears.<\/p>\n

I grabbed him, pulling him tight against my chest. His skin was icy through his onesie.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got you,\u201d I whispered, choking back tears. \u201cDaddy\u2019s here.\u201d<\/p>\n

I sat there, holding both my children as the temperature dropped, something inside me shattering\u2014and reforming into something unbreakable.<\/p>\n

\u201cSophie,\u201d I said quietly, \u201chow long were you out here?\u201d<\/p>\n

She shivered against me. \u201cI don\u2019t know\u2026 maybe ten minutes? She said if I didn\u2019t stop crying, she\u2019d leave me too. She said we were making her head hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked down at her face. Truly looked. Her cheeks were hollow. Dark circles framed her eyes\u2014eyes far too tired for a child.<\/p>\n
