The lobby gasped as one. The silence that followed was absolute.<\/span><\/p>\n

My mother didn\u2019t scream. She didn\u2019t sob. She just sat there, her hand trembling as she touched her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with a shock so profound it looked like physical pain.<\/span><\/p>\n
