Eventually, it scurried past me and out the door. Murphy and I followed it down the hallway and to the back door, which I quickly opened. The raccoon paused on the threshold, looking back at us one last time, before it darted out into the freedom of the early morning.<\/p>\n
I closed the door and let out a huge sigh of relief, locking it securely this time. Murphy wagged his tail, the tension finally leaving his body. I scratched him behind the ears, grateful for his vigilance.<\/p>\n
After making sure all the doors and windows were secure, I made myself a cup of coffee, still trying to shake off the adrenaline. Murphy settled at my feet, his job done for the morning.<\/p>\n
