The room went dead silent. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible!\u201d Mom shrieked.<\/p>\n
I stood up slowly. \u201cThere\u2019s no mistake. The house belongs to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emma\u2019s face went white. \u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n
I reached into my purse and pulled out the deed. \u201cI bought it from Dad over a year ago. Dad needed money, so I helped him. Legal sale, properly recorded. It\u2019s been mine for fourteen months.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re lying!\u201d Emma screamed.<\/p>\n
The lawyer examined the deed. \u201cThis appears to be legitimate.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThis can\u2019t be real!\u201d Mom snatched the papers, her voice shrill. \u201cThis is fraud! You tricked him!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNobody tricked anybody,\u201d I said calmly. \u201cDad needed help. I helped him. Simple as that.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou knew!\u201d Emma was on her feet now, pointing at me. \u201cYou knew we thought we were getting the house!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou never asked. You just assumed. And speaking of which,\u201d I said, my voice turning to ice, \u201cyou have two weeks to move out.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cTwo weeks?\u201d Mom shrieked. \u201cWe can\u2019t find a place in two weeks!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou should have thought of that before you threw my belongings on the lawn.\u201d I walked toward the door.<\/p>\n
Over the next week, my phone rang constantly. Mom crying and begging. Emma screaming and threatening. I ignored them all.<\/p>\n
Two weeks later, I drove to the house. There was a moving truck in the driveway. When I walked inside, the place was stripped bare. They\u2019d taken the furniture, the appliances, even the light fixtures and the toilet seats. The only things left were Dad\u2019s books.<\/p>\n
Emma saw me in the doorway, tears streaming down her face. \u201cThis is all your fault! We\u2019re going to be living in some shitty apartment because of you!\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cYou\u2019re living in a shitty apartment because you spent all your inheritance on stupid crap instead of being responsible adults,\u201d I replied calmly. They drove away without another word.<\/p>\n
I stood in my empty house and smiled.<\/p>\n
Over the next few months, I heard what happened. Mom had to go back to work full-time. Emma sold her Mercedes and got a job at a retail store. Tyler dumped her as soon as he realized she wasn\u2019t rich anymore.<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve been living in the house for two years now. I\u2019ve renovated it exactly how I wanted. The house where I never felt welcome is now my sanctuary. The family that threw me away is struggling while I\u2019m thriving. Do I feel bad about it? Not really. They made their choices. I made mine. And if that makes me the villain in their story, I can live with that. Sometimes, the good guys really do win in the end<\/p>\n
