At Liza’s funeral, a heavy silence hung in the air, broken only by muffled sobs and the dull barking of a dog pulling toward the coffin.

The girl’s grandfather stood still, hands shoved deep into the pockets of his old coat, staring at the white coffin lid under which his only granddaughter rested. She had passed suddenly, far too soon.

The dog paced back and forth, howling, as if it couldn’t accept it. Everyone thought it was out of grief. But the old man sensed something was wrong.

The grandfather stepped toward the coffin. The people around him began to whisper:

– He’s gone mad with grief…
