An Announcement That Stunned Us
My jaw nearly hit the floor when my 19-year-old son walked into the living room one evening and announced, “I’m getting married!” My husband and I exchanged startled glances, unsure if we’d heard correctly. He explained that he had met a young woman only three weeks earlier. Their paths had crossed through friends we didn’t know well, and already they had decided to marry.
Trying to Be Supportive
We wanted to protect him, to caution him, but he was no longer a child. After a long conversation about responsibility, commitment, and the challenges of marriage, we told him gently, “You’re an adult. We won’t stop you.” He smiled with a mixture of relief and excitement. I tried to share in his joy, though unease tugged at me.
