The driver rushed out. The icy air hit his face. The wolves did not touch him – on the contrary, they stepped aside, allowing him to approach the man lying there.
It seemed as if the animals understood: this man was important to them, and it was for him that they had stopped the train.
Leaning down, the driver felt for a pulse. The man was alive but barely breathing. He tried to revive him, rubbing his hands, checking his breathing. The injured man opened his eyes with difficulty, his lips trembling from the cold, but he managed to whisper a few words:
— They… saved me…
It turned out that someone had indeed tried to kill him. Several people had beaten him and thrown him directly onto the tracks, hoping that the next train would finish him off.
