Have you ever considered what constitutes the renowned canned meat known as SPAM? Introduced in 1937 by Hormel Foods, SPAM has become a beloved pantry essential due to its distinctive flavor and adaptability. However, the acronym SPAM remains enigmatic, with interpretations ranging from “Shoulder of Pork And Ham” to “Specially Processed American Meat.” SPAM is available in a variety of flavors, including Hickory Smoke, Hot & Spicy, and even SPAM with Cheese. The product is made from six basic ingredients: pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar, and sodium nitrite, the latter of which helps preserve SPAM by preventing bacterial growth. Notably, the name “SPAM” was proposed by Ken Daigneau.
