In a recent interview, his mother, Meghan Metcalf, spoke with profound grief, her voice heavy with emotion as she recounted the harrowing moment when her surviving son, Hunter, witnessed his identical twin brother take his last breath in his arms. The twins shared an inseparable bond, engaging in all aspects of life together, from academics and athletics to simply experiencing life side by side.
On the morning of April 2, the Metcalf brothers were at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, where Austin was set to compete in shot put and discus. They were seated in their school’s designated tent area when an unexpected altercation arose with another student from Centennial High School, later identified as Anthony Karmel.
Hunter recounted that the student was occupying their team’s tent, and when asked to vacate the space, tensions escalated quickly. “He became aggressive and started speaking recklessly,” Hunter recalled. “My brother intervened and said, ‘You need to move.’ To which he replied, ‘Make me move.’”
