From that night on, Emily silently made it her mission to care for the girls. After long shifts at the diner, she would tuck away a portion of her tips just to buy them food. She searched thrift stores for secondhand clothes, gathered notebooks and pencils for school, and even sat them at her kitchen table to teach them how to read and write.

For ten years, Emily stood by them like a mother. She herself often struggled, working double shifts, skipping meals, and letting go of her own dreams. Yet every time she saw the girls smiling with full bellies, she knew her sacrifice was worth it.

Whispers and Doubts

Not everyone understood. Neighbors gossiped that Emily was wasting her life on children who weren’t her own. Some sneered that she was throwing away money on girls who would never become anything. At times, even Emily questioned how long she could keep going.
