Just then, something extraordinary happened. Shadow, who moments earlier had seemed too weak to move, lifted his head. His cloudy eyes brightened with a glimmer of strength. He pressed his nose firmly into Michael’s chest and let out a soft, almost reassuring sound.
The vet, who had been quietly preparing, froze. He stepped closer, frowning, then bent down to examine Shadow. Moments passed in silence, broken only by Michael’s tears. Then the vet spoke in a hushed but astonished voice:
“Wait… his heartbeat is stronger than before. This… this isn’t what I expected.”
Hope Rekindled
Michael’s sobs quieted as he looked up, his heart racing with a fragile hope. The vet checked again, disbelief written on his face. Shadow was not cured, but something had changed—his body responding to his owner’s presence, to the love enveloping him in those final minutes.
Instead of rushing forward with the procedure, the vet placed a hand on Michael’s shoulder.
“Let’s wait,” he said softly. “Sometimes love does more than medicine ever could.”
