From a young age, Amalie, who was born in Denmark, dealt with the pain of being different. As she recalled in 2019, “I’ve always been fat since I was two years old.” Her weight was a constant source of bullying, beginning in kindergarten, and as she grew older, the bullying only worsened. She struggled with a negative self-image, even resorting to self-harm. “I just had a really horrible self-image,” she said. “I hated looking in the mirror.”

Shopping for clothes only added to her feelings of isolation. Even as a little girl, she was forced to shop in the women’s department because children’s clothing didn’t fit her. She couldn’t wear the trendy clothes other kids wore, which deepened her sense of being different.

Amalie also noticed the lack of representation of people like her in books and media. When overweight characters did appear, they were often portrayed as caricatures, further reinforcing her feelings of inadequacy.

A Life-Changing Connection

Things began to change when Amalie met Sean, a British man, online while playing a video game. At first, she was skeptical—thinking Sean might be an older man looking for a young woman to talk to. But, as it turned out, he was her age, and their connection blossomed into a beautiful friendship, and eventually, a love story.

Their relationship started on a solid foundation of conversation, free from judgment about appearances. While they had seen pictures of each other, it took a while before they began video chatting. Amalie admitted that her insecurities often made her self-conscious, especially in the beginning. She would try to hide her double chin in pictures, but Sean didn’t mind. He just enjoyed talking to her, showing her that he loved her for who she was.

Over time, their friendship deepened, and Amalie mustered the courage to confess her feelings. “It was the weirdest feeling because I hadn’t had luck with boyfriends before,” she said. “And finally, here’s this guy, 500 miles away, who fancies me as much as I fancy him.”

Overcoming Judgment

Amalie eventually moved to England to be with Sean. While their love was strong, they faced external judgment from others. Strangers would often question why Sean, a slim man, would want to be with her, assuming he must have a fetish. But Sean always made it clear that her weight didn’t matter to him. “I fell in love with who she is, not with a number on a scale,” he said.

Despite their strong bond, they had to make the difficult decision to cut ties with Sean’s father, though the exact reasons for this remain private. Despite the obstacles they faced, Amalie and Sean’s relationship stood as a testament to the power of love and acceptance.

A Message of Self-Love

Through her platform, Amalie spoke out against fatphobia, particularly in the medical field, and encouraged people to embrace self-acceptance. She often shared words of wisdom: “If I was ever to go back and speak to a younger Amalie, I would say, ‘Stop wasting time hating yourself. Yes, your body is different, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad body.’”

She continued, “You will never be able to stop people from saying things about you. But you can stop letting it affect you. And you also need to know that you will find people who love you—who love your body for what it is.”

Amalie’s message was simple: Body shaming is harmful and helps no one. Instead of focusing on making people feel bad about themselves, we should work toward creating a world where everyone feels seen, accepted, and valued.

A Legacy of Love

Amalie Jennings passed away on July 15, 2024, at the young age of 30. The circumstances of her death remain unclear, but her obituary revealed that she passed peacefully, leaving behind her loving husband, Sean, and family. Her story, which went viral in 2019, touched the hearts of many, inspiring people around the world to embrace self-love and to stand against fatphobia.

While her life was tragically short, Amalie’s legacy will continue to inspire countless others to be kinder to themselves and to one another. Let’s honor her memory by striving to build a world where every person, no matter their size, feels seen, accepted, and loved.
