Inside, the space was so narrow I could hear my own breathing. The smell of chemicals burned my nose, and darkness enveloped us, except for a thin strip of light filtering under the door. Chloe was shaking in my arms, her small body pressed against mine, seeking refuge. She covered her mouth with her hands, trying to stifle her sobs.
