The footsteps approached until they were right in front of our door. The shadow of the heels projected under the door, covering the thin line of light, the only connection we had left with the outside world. I held my breath, feeling the air in my lungs run out. The steps stopped. Silence. A thick, terrifying silence, as if the world were holding its breath.
