“I heard you remarried,” she said, something strange dancing in her dark eyes. “Congratulations.”

“Thank you. What brings you to the maternity ward?”

“I transferred here six months ago. Pediatric nursing.” She smiled, but it looked like a wound. “Funny how life works out. You here for…?”

“My son was born this morning.”

The color drained from Courtney’s face so fast, I actually reached out to steady her, old instincts overriding present awkwardness. But she jerked back from my touch, her eyes wide and fixed on something behind me.
