Damian’s eyes held a storm of determination as he turned back to me, a silent promise of retribution lingering in the air. I nodded, trusting him implicitly. The car hummed to life, and as we drove away, I resisted the urge to glance back at the house that had briefly been my home. Instead, I focused on the road ahead—a new beginning.

As the cityscape blurred past, I couldn’t help but reflect on the events that had unfolded. Kenneth and Catherine’s betrayal had been the final note in a symphony of discontent. It had started subtly—a snide comment here, a dismissive gesture there—gradually crescendoing into the morning’s destructive crescendo. It was a pattern I’d ignored for too long, dismissing it as family dynamics, not realizing it was a prelude to today’s humiliation.

Damian’s voice interrupted my thoughts, his tone softer now. “You deserve better, you know. I’ve seen how they’ve treated you, and it ends now.”

His words were a balm to my wounded dignity. I managed a small smile in response, feeling the weight of the morning slowly lift. “I wasn’t sure, for a long time, if I was just imagining it,” I admitted. “But today—today made everything clear.”

We continued in silence, comfortable and familiar. Damian was not just my brother; he’d been my confidante, my anchor, the one person who had always believed in me. And now, he was offering me a lifeline.

As we reached his office, Damian’s assistant greeted us, concern etched on her face. Damian waved it off with a reassuring nod, guiding me into his plush office. The space was a stark contrast to the morning’s chaos—a sanctuary of calm.

“Take all the time you need,” Damian said, gesturing to the comfortable couch by the window. “I’ll handle everything.”

I sank down, the tension draining from my body. As Damian busied himself with phone calls, setting in motion a series of events I could only imagine, I let my mind wander to possibilities I had long since stopped considering.

Freedom. Independence. Maybe even happiness.

The door to his office opened, and Damian entered with a tray of warm tea and biscuits. “Thought you might need this,” he said with a smile, placing it before me.

“Thank you,” I replied, genuinely touched by the small gesture. “For everything.”

His expression softened. “You’re my sister. I’ll always have your back.”

As I sipped the tea, I felt the warmth spread through me, chasing away the remnants of the morning’s chill. There was a long road ahead, filled with new challenges and uncertainties, but with my brother’s support, I knew I could face them.

The future was uncertain, but as I sat there, surrounded by warmth and love, I felt something I hadn’t in a long time—hope. Whatever came next, I was ready to meet it head-on.
