At first, all the guests burst out laughing. Someone clapped, someone joked that it would be “the video of the year.” The mother-in-law laughed the loudest, clapping her hands as if it was all part of the entertainment.

But the laughter stopped instantly when, after a few seconds, the pregnant woman still didn’t come up.

“Uh… where is she?” one friend asked.

“She… she’s not coming up…” someone whispered, trembling.

Only the mother-in-law said sharply:

“Oh come on, she can swim… She’s just pretending.”

But the husband spun toward her:

“She can’t swim! And you knew that!”

The mother-in-law’s face turned pale. The smile vanished. She stepped back:

“I… I… I forgot…”

But it was too late. Several men had already jumped into the water. Seconds later one of them resurfaced, holding the unconscious pregnant woman in his arms. People screamed, others burst into tears.

A few weeks later, Victoria walked into what she thought was her fresh start at work, lifted her eyes toward the old stained-glass landing, and realized she was standing inside my house…
