My son-in-law’s family pushed my daughter into the icy lake “as a joke.” She struck her head and nearly went under. While I shouted for help, they just laughed and said, “She’s fine!” before driving away. As the paramedics lifted her into the ambulance, I called my older brother and whispered, “They’re on their way home.” His reply made my heart race: “Then it’s time.”

The air that day at the Vanderbilt lake house on Lake Tahoe smelled of pine needles and fear. To everyone else, it probably just smelled of pine and the smoke from the grill that had long since cooled, but for me, I always caught that second, bitter undertone. I sat on a wicker chair on the porch, a little separate from the big table, and watched my daughter, Lena.
