Right under the aquarium, next to the wires, a tiny spark was flickering. The cable connected to the filter had started melting — a short circuit had occurred. One more second and the girl would have touched the exposed section. The dog had gotten there first.

After they unplugged the aquarium and made sure the danger was gone, the Labrador was still sitting next to the girl, panting heavily and refusing to leave her side — even after being unfairly scolded.
