He called me twenty-seven times that morning. I didn’t answer. Instead, I sat in the quiet apartment with a cup of coffee, watching sunlight inch across the floor. For the first time in years, my mind felt like it belonged entirely to me.

The message on the mirror was brief and direct:
“You didn’t make a youthful mistake. You made a choice. This is mine.”
Beneath it, I’d written three dates—moments when he dismissed me, embarrassed me, or treated my support as disposable. There were no insults, no theatrics. Just facts.

By noon, Daniel appeared at the apartment where I was staying. I hadn’t given him the address, but he’d always been skilled at finding things. He looked rattled—angry, confused—and insisted we needed to “talk like adults.”

So we did.

I reminded him of the night he told his friends I was “temporary.” The anniversaries I spent alone while he traveled for work. The way my career as a physical therapist was always described as “cute.” He tried to interrupt, but I kept speaking. And for once, he listened.
