6 Types of Acne and What Might Cause Them

Posted on December 20, 2025 By Admin No Comments on 6 Types of Acne and What Might Cause Them

There are two categories of acne blemishes: noninflammatory acne and inflammatory acne. This classification depends on whether they cause inflammation or not. Inflammatory acne is more severe than noninflammatory acne and often requires medical

consultation for treatment.

Before exploring treatment options, let’s first understand what causes the most common types of acne.

Whiteheads

Whiteheads

Whiteheads are noninflammatory, flesh- or whitish-colored bumps that typically have a white center surrounded by a red halo. In some cases, a hair may protrude from the center, or it may appear trapped inside.

Causes: Whiteheads form when dirt, oil (sebum), and dead skin cells clog the pores. These are enclosed within the pore, preventing oxidation.

Blackheads

Blackheads

Unlike whiteheads, blackheads (noninflammatory) are dark or black-colored small spots that appear as raised bumps.

Usually, the skin surrounding a blackhead remains normal, while the center appears darker. Causes: The dark color of blackheads does not indicate excess dirt but rather the oxidation of clogged pores. They form due to widened, clogged hair follicles.

Papules

Papules

Papules are inflammatory acne that develops under

the skin’s surface.

The surrounding skin is usually red, swollen, and tender. Unlike whiteheads and blackheads, papules are raised, pink, solid, and do not have a visible center or widened pore.

Causes: Papules occur due to bacterial infections in clogged pores, leading to inflammation and irritation.

Pustules (Pimples)

Pustules (Pimples)

Pustules, commonly known as pimples, are tender, larger bumps with a circular center.

They contain yellowish or whitish pus over a red, inflamed base.

They closely resemble whiteheads but are inflamed. Causes: Pustules form when clogged pores become infected, leading to an accumulation of pus.

Nodules

Nodules

Nodules are inflamed, painful, and hard lumps located deep within the skin.

This severe type of acne can lead to long-term skin complications such as scarring and dark spots.

Causes: Nodules develop when clogged pores cause deep tissue damage beneath the skin’s surface.

Cysts

Cysts

Cystic

acne occurs when pustules become infected, resulting in large, painful, red or white lumps deep within the skin—even deeper than nodules.

These cysts are soft and filled with pus. Due to their severity, they are more likely to cause permanent scarring.

Causes: Cystic acne forms from infected pustules and is often linked to hormonal imbalances, bacteria, and excessive oil production.

  • She showed up at my door shaking—my twin sister—covered in bruises she tried to hide with long sleeves. “Don’t… don’t ask,” she whispered. But I did. And when I learned it was her husband, my blood turned to ice. That night, we switched places. He leaned in, smug, murmuring, “Finally learned to behave?” I smiled like her—and answered like me: “No. I learned how to bite.” When the lights went out, he realized the wife he broke… wasn’t the one in the room anymore.
  • I paid off my husband’s $150,000 debt. The next day, he told me to leave like I meant nothing. “You’re useless now,” he said, shoving divorce papers into my hands. “Get out. She’s moving in—with me and my parents.” I didn’t cry. I didn’t argue. I just smiled and said quietly, “Then all of you should leave.”
  • My parents paid $180K for my brother’s med school, telling me, “Girls don’t need degrees. Find a husband.” At his engagement party, my father toasted him as the family’s “ONLY successful child.” But then his fiancée looked at me, her face pale with shock. She wasn’t looking at a forgotten sister; she was staring at the ring on the hand of the surgeon who saved her life.
  • My 11-year-old daughter came home, but her key no longer fit the door. She waited in the pouring rain for five long hours. Then my mother finally stepped outside and said, “We’ve decided—you and your mother don’t live here anymore.” I didn’t argue. I simply replied, “Alright.” Three days later, a single letter arrived… and her face turned ghost-white.
  • My husband abandoned our newborn twins—because his wealthy mother told him to. They were certain I’d struggle and disappear quietly, raising the babies in misery. But one night they turned on the TV… and froze at what they saw.
