It was a physical sensation, like a door slamming shut in a drafty room. I realized I was no longer their mother; I was a resource they had depleted.

Instead of begging for a pity seat at the table, I drained a secret account none of them knew existed—money left to me by my own father, specifically for a “rainy day.” It wasn’t raining; it was pouring. I bought silence. I bought a mountain. A creaky, two-story cabin and three acres of dense pine became my sanctuary. I stacked firewood until my hands were calloused, baked bread in a wood-fired oven, and installed Sentinel-Grade high-definition security cameras to capture every second of the audacity I knew would eventually arrive.
