At the charity auction, my husband decided to make a joke and put me up as a lot: “Dinner with my interesting wife, starting price — just one dollar” 😨😢
The guests began laughing and placing bids over one another, turning everything into a ridiculous form of entertainment, until suddenly, from the back rows, an unknown man stood up and did something that made the entire hall freeze in shock 😱
It was the company’s annual charity auction, where my husband worked. Everything was happening just before New Year’s, a time when people especially like to pretend they are kind and generous.
I was sitting at a round table in an impeccable dress, my hair neatly styled, a glass of champagne in front of me. From the outside, I might have seemed calm and confident, but inside me there had long lived a strange, anxious premonition. On evenings like that, my husband always became different — loud, self-satisfied, far too convinced that everything was allowed to him.
As usual, he was the center of attention. He moved from one group of guests to another, laughed louder than anyone else, shook hands, caught glances. When he approached me, he leaned down and whispered with a radiant smile that he had prepared a “small surprise” for the auction.
When the host announced the next lot, my husband confidently stepped onto the stage and took the microphone. The hall grew quieter — everyone knew how much he loved dramatic entrances.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” he began with a theatrical pause, “today I’ve decided to donate something special.”
He turned and pointed straight at me.
“Dinner with my… very interesting…” — he pretended to search for the right word — “boring wife. Starting bid — just one dollar.”
A second of silence — and then the hall burst into laughter. Loud, sticky, merciless. I felt hundreds of eyes pierce into me, my face betraying me by turning pale, my hands growing cold. The humiliation washed over me completely, as if I had been dragged onto the stage without clothes.
The bids began to rise — not because anyone truly wanted that dinner, but simply for fun. Five dollars. Ten. Twenty. My husband kept joking, adding fuel to the fire, enjoying the attention and his own wit.
And then, suddenly, the laughter stopped.
In the back row, a tall man slowly stood up. A stranger. His movements were calm, confident, unhurried. Such silence fell over the room that one could hear someone nervously setting a glass down on a table.

“Your wife is a wonderful woman. And I very much wish to get to know her better. And if you are against it…” — he paused briefly — “I can simply fire you. Because, as a matter of fact, I am the director of this company.”
Then he looked at me. His gaze was warm, attentive, without the slightest trace of mockery.
“I have seen many beautiful women,” he said quietly, but so that everyone could hear. “But you are special.”
I stood up. Without haste. Without words. For the first time in a long while, I felt not shame, but strength. I placed my hand in his and nodded.
We left the hall hand in hand.
Behind us remained stunned guests, frozen waiters, and my husband — pale and utterly lost.
