They were crawling so closely and in such perfect order that it almost seemed choreographed. I’d never seen anything like it before. I later learned that this behavior, known as “processionary movement,” might help protect the group from predators or help them reach food more efficiently. Nature really does work in mysterious ways.

Even now, I wonder where they were going and how they all knew to move together like that. Some experts say it’s an instinctive survival strategy. Have you ever witnessed something like this in your own yard—or do you know where a line of caterpillars might be headed?
