“I was going to. But then your dad showed up,” Lili explained, glancing gratefully at him. “He came by the house early, saw I was upset, and insisted on coming with me for support. I didn’t want to involve you because I thought I could handle it without ruining the day for us.”
My father nodded, adding, “I couldn’t let her face it alone, son. I had to help.”
I sighed deeply, feeling a mixture of relief and residual anger. It wasn’t easy to process everything at once, but the love I felt for Lili and Emma was stronger than any momentary confusion or hurt. I stepped closer and took Lili’s hand, squeezing it gently. “Thank you for protecting Emma,” I said, my voice thick with emotion.
Lili’s eyes filled with tears as she whispered, “I’m so sorry for not telling you sooner.”
I nodded, knowing we both had our reasons and fears. “Let’s handle this together from now on, alright?”
My father cleared his throat, looking slightly awkward but relieved. “I’m here for both of you, whatever you need,” he promised.
With the storm clouds of misunderstanding beginning to clear, we made our way back home together. It was a long conversation on the drive back, but one filled with hope and resolution. Our wedding would still happen, but now built on an even stronger foundation of trust and unity. As we pulled into the driveway, I realized that the day wasn’t lost; it was transformed. And for that, I was grateful.
