“Rex?” Alex whispered, startled.
Without looking back, Rex ran toward another officer standing by the wall. It was Alex’s former colleague—Oliver. The same officer who had testified against him. Oliver had seemed calm, stoic even… until now.
Rex stopped right in front of Oliver, growling deeply, menacingly. The entire courtroom held its breath.
“What does this mean?” the judge asked in a hushed tone.
Oliver stepped back, but Rex advanced. The dog rose onto his hind legs and nudged his nose into the breast pocket of Oliver’s uniform. Oliver flinched, visibly shaken.
“Get that dog away from me!” he shouted, but it was already too late.
A guard moved forward, but the prosecutor gestured for him to wait. A court officer stepped up, opened the breast pocket of Oliver’s uniform, and pulled out a small flash drive.
“What is this?” the judge asked, his voice trembling.
Rex sat down at Oliver’s feet, never once taking his eyes off the officer.
The flash drive was plugged into a nearby laptop. The screen flickered to life, and a video began to play. It showed Oliver counting large amounts of money. It showed him forging documents. Then came a clip of him speaking on the phone: “We’ll pin everything on Miller. He won’t talk—too proud.”
The judge’s voice rang out. “This hearing is suspended. The witness is placed under arrest. The verdict against Miller is now invalid, pending further investigation.”
Alex remained kneeling on the floor, his hand clutching his chest in disbelief. Rex slowly walked back to him, nudging his nose against Alex’s cheek.
“You saved me…” Alex whispered.
