Our family has a long tradition of monthly dinners, started by my grandmother to keep us all close. Growing up, my siblings and I loved these gatherings, and now we continue them with our own families. Hosting duties rotate, and a few months ago Megan took over cooking.
She was excited at first, but as soon as we announced she’d cook, the criticism began. My sister Angela said the food was bland, my brother Dan complained the chicken was dry, and my mom picked apart the seasoning. Watching Megan’s face fall was devastating. She cried and said she didn’t want to cook anymore.
I convinced her to try once more, preparing dishes she knew my family liked, but the harsh comments returned. Then I overheard my parents making snide remarks about Megan, and it hit me—this wasn’t about the food.
So at the next dinner, I pretended I cooked Megan’s dishes. Suddenly, they praised the food, raving about how delicious everything was. Angela called it the best pasta she’d had, and Mom couldn’t stop complimenting the chicken.
When I told them the truth—that Megan had cooked the meal—the room fell silent. They tried to backtrack, but it was clear: their rejection was personal.
That night, I decided enough was enough. We stopped the monthly dinners. Family traditions don’t matter if they come at the expense of the person you love. Megan deserved respect and kindness, and I chose to stand by her.
