Clogged pores typically happen when there’s an overproduction of oil, which then becomes trapped by dead skin cells that haven’t properly shed from the lining of the pore. Additionally, makeup, dirt, and ingredients that are comedogenic (pore-clogging) can contribute to the blockage and prevent oil from flowing freely through the pore.

What Does Comedogenic Mean?

Comedogenic refers to substances that clog pores, and while these ingredients aren’t the only cause of acne or breakouts, they can certainly make the problem worse. As board-certified dermatologist Rachel Nazarian, MD, explains, «Pore-clogging ingredients make it much more likely that pimples will form.»

For individuals with naturally oily skin or those who carry acne-causing bacteria, using products with comedogenic ingredients can be problematic. «It’s like adding gas to the fire,» says Dr. Nazarian. «This combination can exacerbate acne and lead to consistent breakouts.»

Taking care to choose non-comedogenic products can help in reducing the risk of clogged pores, and managing acne in the long run.
