The doctors looked at each other. The woman was 43 years old. Alone. No family, no children. Only the dog – an old, faithful German Shepherd named Greta. They had lived together for more than ten years. Greta had been with her in the hardest moments – after losing her parents, the divorce, the illnesses.

– Ten minutes, – one of the doctors said reluctantly.

When Greta was brought in, she was at first confused by the hospital smells and white walls, but then she recognized her owner and rushed to her.

– Hello, my girl, – the woman stroked her soft fur. Tears fell on her hands. – Sorry… Sorry I’m leaving you. I’m scared, but you don’t have to be. My smart girl, I love you very much.

The dog pressed her whole body against her, froze, and then suddenly… became alert.

Greta growled. It was not a frightened sound. The owner raised herself on her elbows, confused, when she saw her faithful dog jump between her and the doctors who entered the room with a stretcher.

– Greta, what are you doing? Quiet! – she exclaimed scared. But the dog kept growling.

One of the doctors stepped forward to take the woman for the operation, but Greta suddenly lunged forward — and bit the doctor’s arm. She had never done that before…

– Take the dog away! – the nurses shouted.

The woman watched everything in shock. Greta barked and howled, trying to break free, as if she wanted to say something important, something urgent, something that only she could understand.

And then she understood.

– Wait, – the woman said with difficulty. – I… I refuse the operation. Do a re-examination. Immediately.

– That’s madness, – the doctor objected, holding his bandaged arm. – You’re risking your life!

– I feel… I have to be sure. She… she senses something. My dog has never behaved like this before.

That very evening she had new tests done. New scans. An MRI.

They couldn’t believe their eyes. Not one of the doctors.

The tumor had disappeared. Completely. No trace. As if it had never existed.

A week later she was already walking with Greta in the park. Without IVs. Without stitches. Without fear.

She knelt before the dog, pressed her head to its chest.

– You saved me. You knew. How?..

Greta sighed softly, licked her cheek, and laid her head on her shoulder.
